Periodic homogenization with an interface

چکیده

We consider a diffusion process with coefficients that are periodic outside of an ‘interface region’ of finite thickness. The question investigated in the articles is the limiting long time / large scale behaviour of such a process under diffusive rescaling. It is clear that outside of the interface, the limiting process must behave like Brownian motion, with diffusion matrices given by the standard theory of homogenization. The interesting behaviour therefore occurs on the interface. Our main result is that the limiting process is a semimartingale whose bounded variation part is proportional to the local time spent on the interface. We also exhibit an explicit way of identifying its parameters in terms of the coefficients of the original diffusion. Our method of proof relies on the framework provided by Freidlin and Wentzell for diffusion processes on a graph in order to identify the generator of the limiting process.

Acoustic Wave Propagation in a Composite of Two Different Poroelastic Materials with a Very Rough Periodic Interface: a Homogenization Approach

Homogenization is used to analyze the system of Biot-type partial differential equations in a domain of two different poroelastic materials with a very rough periodic interface. It is shown that by using homogenization, such a rough interface can be replaced by an equivalent flat layer within which a system of modified differential equations holds. The coefficients of this new system of equatio...

On the limit and applicability of dynamic homogenization

Recent years have seen considerable research success in the field of dynamic homogenization which seeks to define frequency dependent effective properties for heterogeneous composites for the purpose of studying wave propagation. There is an approximation involved in replacing a heterogeneous composite with its homogenized equivalent. In this paper we propose a quantification to this approximat...

Fractal homogenization of multiscale interface problems

Inspired from geological problems, we introduce a new geometrical setting for homogenization of a well known and well studied problem of an elliptic second order differential operator with jump conditions on a multiscale network of interfaces. The geometrical setting is fractal and hence neither periodic nor stochastic methods can be applied to the study of such kind of multiscale interface pro...
